I just inherited my grandmother's 1974 Volkswagen Beetle and it has been garaged it's entire life. Well I finally found some tires to replace the dry rotted ones and I cannot get the front lid open on the car. You push the button and I can see like a round rod move backwards but I do not know how the mechanism works. Any hints out there. I don't want to have to tear the hood off to get in it.

Are you trying the hood release lever in glove-box? You are having a common problem. When you get in, be sure to adjust cable from lever at latch. Meantime sometimes the lever needs gentle persuasion sometimes you must press button and pull down-out-and-away; sometimes all of the above. ENJOY.
