i recently purchased a '02 1.8t passat. it has 62,000 miles on it, and the orange light i believe is a check engine light came on. I took it to autozone and the error code it came up with was P0171 which is car running too lean. Listed probable causes are
1. oxygen senser defective
2. Ignition misfire-repair
3. Fuel injecter problem

I talked to a friend who works on cars a bit and he suggested it could be spark plugs and had me reset the error code by unhooking the battery. When i turned it on the code was gone and i then drove it for about 100 miles. The light suddenly came on when i just turned it on. Any ideas? Oh also sometimes when i start the car the bottom row on the dash that shows what gear the car is in sometimes says solid so it wont show what gear its in and the tiptronic doesnt work. If i turn it off then on again it goes away. Any ideas on that either? Thanks for the help.

if you have a lean running code it would be none of the above that autozone told you i would check most all your vacuum lines because you more then likely have a vacuum leak i would start with the one right off the intake located towards the front of the engine i would bet anyone of those vac lines are broken i work for vw and i see it all the time. worse case possible turbo cut off valve or mass air. worse case!!

wow mattc01 thank you so much. that is exactly what it was. the vacuum line had snapped. i replaced it, and now its running great. Just waiting to finish a drive cycle so the check engine light turns off. Once again thank you so much.
