my vw golf gti will not start, there is no spark from the coil to the distributor to plugs. I need advice will it be the coil or the control box

Most likely a coil, since they have a high failure rate. It's best to verify by checking for power, ground, and impulse going to the coil. All of which can be quickly checked with a test light at the connector.
