I know I need to replace the condenser for my A/C unit as it's intake/output hose on driver-side bottom of unit was broken several years ago. Do I need to replace more than this? I've read that some recommend replacing the accumulator, A/C hose and expansion valve. Also, when the time comes to recharge the system, must it be done in a shop, or can I recharge it myself?

Hi there,

The problem that you have is that the system has been open to the atmosphere for so long, many major components may be beyond use, i would be concerned with the compressor and the evaporator as corrosion will be formed internally by now, the receiver dryer must be replaced, i would let an A/C tech check this over and report before you go spending to much money on a system that may now be beyond economical repair.
