My temperature gauge kept on going into the red then coming down, and I kept on losing my cabin temperature, my pal said its probly the water pump failing, so it kept on doing it for months then it took the head gasket out, so I have taken the pump of and had a look and it spins fine and dosnt have any bearing woble failure? So how do I know its failing? Or could it have been a belt slipage fault, coz it would go into the red then drop back down, so could it be belt slipage? Your help would be helpful.

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad.
