2006 Vauxhall Astra Two Wheel Drive Manual 25000 miles

Hi, suddenly lost the majority of power in my car today. Looked down to see the engine management light had come on.
Eventually got home in limp mode, checked the manual and it suggested turning off the iginition and starting the car up again. This worked for about 5 minutes but the light has had a mind of its own since coming on for periods of upto 15 minutes and severely effecting the performance of the car.
I'm fully aware that I need to take the car in and get it hooked upto a computer but was after any sort of suggestion as to what this problem might possibly be or if this is a common fault in the astra?
Thanks

The Astra is just the same as most cars these days ! All engines are now controlled by ECU's and as with all computer's they get glitches. The MIL (management light)is not causing your car to run rough. The MIL is coming on when a sensor picks up a fault in the cars Powertrain or Emmissions. Untill you have the cars computer read. We will never know the fault. As it comes and goes. It is called an intermittent and is generally (not always)in the wiring somewhere. The ECU should be recording where this fault lies (storing fault codes). And when you have the computer read it will tell you/the technician roughly where the fault actually lies. To sum up your car is no worse or better in this respect as most cars on the market ! When you have the codes if you would like to repost with the codes and we can diagnose the actual fault and help you to repair the vehicle ! Hope this helps
