Unknown coolant leakage

I have no visible wet spots, but I have to add coolant quite frequently. I have always had the number 3 cylinder singing the blues. Meaning, misfire, and plug failure. Plug is always clean. Very little discoloration. I have just been noticing a white thin crust or film on the exhaust manifold and coming from around the exhaust bolt. Second one in from the rear side of the manifold. Number 3 cylinder.
Any chance you might be able to help me with deciding if I have a gasket failure or worst-case scenario. Cracked, head, block? No prob with fluids interaction. Tried sending a picture but couldn't get a good image. No loss of power. Fuel mileage loss is possible but I'm not sure at this time.

Hi,

I suspect it is a failed head gasket. The easiest thing to do is check engine compression to see if it is lower in that cylinder. Here is a link that shows how to check engine compression. Also, pay attention to see if there is any white smoke from the exhaust and confirm the motor oil doesn't appear to have a tan-colored sludge.

Here is a link that explains how to test for a bad head gasket which you may want to do first simply much of it is visual and won't require the compression test until certain criteria have been met.

Keep in mind, the idea that the coolant level has been an issue doesn't only indicate a leak. It could be getting burned in the combustion chamber, mixed into the engine oil, or leaking.

If you can take a picture of the crust on the manifold. I realize you are having trouble getting a good pic, but as long as I can see it, I should be able to tell if it's coolant.

Thank you for your response. I've not seen any of the fluid's intermixing in any way. I haven't seen it on the plug either. The crust has been in just the last month. Started out with just a small amount around the second bolt on the exhaust and has been looking more like it's spraying down the side of the exhaust manifold towards the bottom right, almost reaching the donut connection. But I will try to get a good picture of it for you. I was suspicious of the gasket and hopefully not any more than that. I'll get back with you later on the compression test results. Thank you again. Sounds good. Let me know what is found. Also, pay close attention to hoses as well such as heater core hoses. Additionally, you may want to pressure test the system to see if you can create the leak and see it.

You will need a pressure tester, but most parts stores will lend you one. Here is a link that explains how it is done:
