Just recently, my car started to make a crunching noise as I turned the wheel right on a sharp turn. When it happens, the car brakes itself. It sounds like it’s coming from underneath the driver side. The subframe dropped from the car recently due to something coming lose, but was fixed. Only thing that was damaged was the steering rod which was repaired.

Based on this, I suspect there was more damage done that was not found.

If the subframe dropped then that will throw off the alignment and possibly damage other steering or suspension components.

Can you get a recording of this noise as that will help as well:

This could be an axle issue or an issue with the steering rack itself. However, I suspect that it is something else that is bent and causing a binding noise at the steering lock.

We need to inspect the operation of the steering gear by lifting the front end and put it on jack stands and operate the steering all the way to the locks and see if it makes the noise or if something looks off compared to the other side.
