On this car there is button in car and on key fob to open trunk. There is also a key hole on trunk but key does not open it. Should there be a key to open it or is it there for looks?

Your ignition key/valet key should open the trunk. If it does not work, I suspect someone has changed either the key or the trunk cylinder along the way and now they no longer match. I assume you recently purchased this vehicle? If that is the case, you have have a couple options. First does the key work on the door? If it does then a previous owner lost the keys and purchased a blank key and door cylinder and made their own code in case someone stole their key and they could then get access to the vehicle. So they changed this but didn't do the trunk as well.

If this is the case, have the key decoded and then recode the trunk to match the key.

If none of the lock cylinders work then you will need to change them all.

Your other option is to get a new key and lock cylinders and recode them all to what you want. Clearly this is not needed unless you feel the desire to start fresh.

Let me know if I am missing something. Thanks.

It sounds like the trunk lock needs to be re-keyed are replaced. Here is how you can remove the lock cylinder in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Can I just buy the lock cylinder or do I have to buy the whole thing? I can’t find a lock cylinder online to fit it.

It is a standard lock cylinder. Here is a screen shot right out of the Mopar parts catalog for a 2008 Charger. It is number 8 on the picture.

Most all Chrysler products use the same lock cylinder.
