A pink and black wire coming from the positive side of battery at the starter solenoid and comes out in drivers kick panel by drivers door just to the left of brake pedal, goes under dash. it came disconnected and now my truck will not start. I turn key and get all my lights on dash, radio, bells and dings, outside lights, but no start. no nothing. Help me please I am a single woman and need my truck to work. Thank you

This sounds like the starter is having problems or the battery needs to be load tested these guides can help us fix it.

starter is only about 2 yrs old, alternator is about 3 or 4 yrs old, brand new battery. I have plenty of power, but the car will not turn over. as if a kill switch was stopping it. Disabled the alarm and that did not solve it. It will start once in a rare while. There is a clicking noise that seems to be coming from the direction of the distributer box every time i turn the key with the clutch down. . checked all fuses. do not know how to check relays. did not try light test with starter because i do not have the light. any suggestions?

It will not even crank, just clicks from the left side near the distribution box under the hood. the clicking can actually be felt by vibration but i am having trouble finding where it could be exactly. We cannot even popstart it now. It seems as if there has been a progressive decline over the past weeks in it working and getting worse. I have not checked the spark plugs but they are only 3-4 years old. the truck does not get much use. if you need any other info please let me know.

If you hear a click, then either the battery is weak, or the starter, possibly bad battery cable connections, check and clean both ends of BOTH cables! Dissconnect negative(-) first, and put it on last! If no click the starter relay is no good!

If battery/connections are okay-check fuse no. 24 10amp if okay-jumper clutch switch at clutch pedal support red and blue or white and pink wire to the plain pink wire at connector. Note: The red and blue or white and pink wire at the switch connector should have power when key is at start positon. No power to this wire and fuse no.24 okay-the ignition switch is bad. When clutch switch is jumpered the red and light blue wire at starter relay should have power and also the black wire going to the starter solenoid. Power at black wire on the solenoid-Replace the starter- See starter circuit below

My truck will not start, not even turn over. All the lights come on and the fuel pump runs for a couple seconds but nothing else. I replaced the solenoid and the clutch switch and I cannot think of anything else. Any ideas?

My son was driving his truck last night and the oil gauge dropped to 0, the Check Engine light came on and the truck quit. I tried to jump it but it wouldn't turn over - it only made a clunking sound (as opposed to a clicking sound when the battery is dead). There were no engine noises prior to it stopping. Any ideas?

Ok have you checked the starter to see if by chance it is bad? Have you checked the starter relay to see if it is bad. It is on the fender near the battery. The possitive cable goes to it then to the starter. Here is what it looks like.

I have not checked the starter to see if it is working. However, that shouldn't be part of the problem as to why the oil pressure dropped and the engine quit running. Any other ideas? I have received a couple of comments that the engine may have seized. Thoughts?

Yes the engine may have seazed but that is why the oil pressure unit is also a fuel pump shut off to help prevent that from happening. I would check the starter system to eliminate this from being the problem before determining the engine is seaze. You could allways try to turn the engine over manually if you can do that then engine is not seazed and you can move on to check the starter system for issues.

Good morning.

Make sure the connection is good from the solenoid on the fender to the starter motor itself.

Then check the wire at the solenoid on the starter. The little wire should have power with the key in the start position only.

If it does, then you need a starter motor. If it does not then we need to do some checks at the relay.

Truck won't start, and we don't know what else to check. Turn the key, and all electrical comes on, but starter just clicks. Charged the battery, still nothing. Engine turns over and starts when we short across the starter solenoid. Replaced starter solenoid, but this didn't fix the problem. We checked and replaced fuses, still no dice. Can someone give me some ideas on what to check next? I really hate to take it to a shop and find out it was something I could have handled myself!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Tigersgrrl. Welcome to the forum. Unplug the red wire with blue stripe from the starter relay. Use a test light to check for voltage on that wire when the ignition switch is in the "crank" position. This guide can help us fix it

Instead of just throwing parts at it, which will get you nowhere, why don't you do some testing to find out where your problem is. Here is the diagram you will need to do that. https://www.2carpros.com/images/external/42370987.gif

Maybe there was a miscommunication here but I have no tester to begin with had I had one I would not have spent 200 in parts just to fix it, just like if I had the repair manual I would not be on this site asking a simple question. Now for my simple question so once I do get a tester I can test it. Where is the ignition switch located in my 1994 Ford Ranger XLT club cab with a 2.3L 4 cyl engine and 5 speed standard transmission?

Replaced battery, starter, solenoid switch and solenoid on starter. Turn the key it does nothing. Started out having to cross solenoid switch to start it. Found a wire unplugged toward the bottom of the battery but cannot find one that plugs into it.

Ford used three different versions of starting circuits. If you have a solenoid on top of the starter motor, with a big fat battery cable and a smaller second wire attached to it, the solenoid on the inner fender is just being used as a simple starter relay, not as the actual solenoid like they used in previous years. You will see there is no fat cable bolted to the second large terminal on it. Because of this, there are three versions of that solenoid / relay on the inner fender and you must use the correct one. Did this problem show up before you replaced any parts or only after you replaced them?

Start by unplugging the small red / blue wire from the relay. Connect a grounded test light to that wire, then see if it lights up when you turn the ignition switch to "crank".

If I may jump in here, it sounds like it could be the neutral safety switch. here is a guide on how to test it.

You have to be sure the battery has a full charge, first. If the battery is down, you can't do any testing. Turn on your headlights, turn key to crank, any reaction from the headlamps? If they go out, usually the battery or cables. If they stay bright, no reaction, there is an open circuit to the starter., should be two hot wires at the starter with key in the crank position, use a voltage tester. You need to be sure the tranny is in neutral, wheels blocked, functional e-brake set. It wouldn't hurt to have a helper sitting in there with foot on the brake. You don't want to accidently crank it with the tranny in gear.

Ranger will not start - battery has power (lights work and clock has correct time), no clicking sound when key engaged. Could this be a relay problem? Car was operating in daylight for approx 2 hrs before engine shut down. Would not restart.

If the starter won't crank? Check the starter circuits. Any testing at the starter, make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set. Could be issue with neutral switch or clutch switch. You could try a jumper wire on the load side of starter relay, to see if starter will crank. In the diagram, the load side of relay is the line with the arrowhead on it, When the relay is energized that arrowhead moves to the other terminal. Like I said, make sure the tranny is out of gear.
