So I'm back with my vehicle, which now has a busted up transmission. Quick diagnosis, car had a slight burning smell but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Checked the fluid but it was bright and free of metal. One night, I was coming to a stop at a red light. Like I always do I, eased my foot off the gas and lightly tapped the brakes. As I slowed down I hit a pothole hard. Or so I thought. The car jerked forward then stopped. Car wouldn't go forward after that. Only in reverse. After looking up what could be the issue, I've come up with forward band snapped. I'm going to fix it myself. I have a new band. New solenoids, going to bust this thing open and change the band. My question is, how do I check the clutches and anything else to see if those things failed as well? I will change whatever is necessary to fix it. Basically I want a crash course on the 4T65E. Now, I hear there are different versions of this transmission. How do I find out mine in the vehicle listed above?

You are correct that there are different versions of this transmission but only one for this year and vehicle. They made some changes over the years but each model year is not going to have different versions within that model year.

I am attaching the info below on this but you need to basically inspect the pan for metal when you tear it down.

I would suggest just replacing the clutches while you are in there but if you just want to go in and replace this band, that would be fine as well.

If the vehicle was driving fine before then it will drive that same way after you replace the band and get it operating again.

As far as a crash course in this unit, it is not a very complicated unit.

So just let us know what specific information you are looking for and we will be happy to send it over.

Please see some of the diagnostic checks and process for this band replacement and let me know what else you need.

Okay, I did forget to mention the condition before the failure. It slipped going from 1st to 2nd and occasionally. The speed was really affected. Even getting on the freeway it wouldn't get up to speed really quickly. This isn't a fast truck but the 0-60 time was really long. I also noticed a small leak coming from either the transmission or the cooler. Can't figure out which one it's coming from. I see the fluid in the middle of the cooler lines. Besides from that it's fine. I plan on replacing any seals I can.

Okay. That does sound like you have internal issues. If it were me, I would look at rebuild the unit. They have master rebuild kits for pretty cheap. I attached a picture below.

Let us know how you make out with this. Thanks for the update.
