The car stays in only one gear after putting it drive, it does not select.

If it seems to start moving less quickly than normal, then does not up-shift, it is in "limp mode". That is second gear. It is designed to let you drive slowly to a repair shop without needing a tow truck.

The transmission computer detected a problem, set a diagnostic fault code, then put the system in limp mode. Turn the ignition switch off, then restart the engine to get it out of limp mode.

You can often get a rough idea of the type of problem by observing when it goes to limp mode. When an electrical problem is detected, the car will start out in second gear the instant you shift to "drive". If there is mechanical wear to the clutch plates causing slipping in a clutch pack, that slippage will be detected usually during or right after an up-shift, or sometimes during a down-shift. The car will start out in first gear like normal, then bang back to second gear when that slippage is detected. That problem can sometimes be overcome for a while by accelerating harder than normal, then letting up when you want the up-shift to occur. Once it does, accelerate to the next up-shift, then let off the accelerator a little again. Letting up on the accelerator reduces the torque and the tendency for slippage to occur in a clutch pack. The extra few seconds gives the plates time to lock up solidly, then you can accelerate again. That trick only works for a little while. With a little more wear, the plates will never lock up. That can often give you a few more months before a rebuild is needed.

There is going to be a diagnostic fault code in the transmission computer. That will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis, or the unacceptable operating condition.
