When moving the gear selector into drive position, the dash illuminates intermediate gear?

When moving the gear selector into drive position, the dash illuminates (Intermediate gear) and the car drives in that gear. It shifts hard, I believe because I’m driving in normal conditions (not towing a load or straining the engine on hill climbs, etc.) And is definitely putting strain on the engine as it over-revs and is locked out of OD. I’m planning to do repairs myself as I’m an experienced (at-home) mechanic, but I’m not sure where to start.

It sounds like the gear range sensor is not working correctly, but we should run the codes to see what comes up. This guide can help, and I have included how to change the sensor out in the images below.

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Correction: it is Intermediate gear, not intermittent, my bad. I have scanned it and had a garage scan it for me as well. The only code pulled was P0405 which is low voltage in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and I doubt that has any effect on the transmission not shifting to drive.

I’ll get a picture/short video when I go to do some body work on the car later. For now I have this from the manual.

Also, I do not have a gear range sensor like the one pictured in the diagrams you posted. Where that would be, I have this. Which I believe to be the TCM.
