When cold and shifting the transmission from park to reverse or from neutral to drive the engine stalls

My transmission went out, so I had another one put in. It drove fine at first, but the issues started the next day. If I shift from park to reverse or from neutral to drive, when cold, my vehicle stalls out. If I warm the truck up for 20-25 minutes, it shifts perfectly fine. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hi,

When this happens, does the vehicle lurch forward as if you popped the clutch on a manual transmission?

Julia, was the torque converter replaced as well as the transmission? I'm thinking it may not be fully releasing the engine when stopped due to a line pressure issue. Also, ATF expands when it gets hot. Make sure the fluid level is correct because if it is low, it could cause issues until it warms.

At this point, let me know as much as you can so I know which direction to go. Also, I need to know if the engine size and transmission (see pic 1). It appears there are several different transmissions that may have been used. Let me know if it is 4wd also.

If you haven't already, I recommend having the computer scanned to see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes that can point us in the right direction. Most parts stores will do it for free.

Let me know.

Joe
