Hi Lori.
The (CEL) check engine light does not need to be lit. It is only lit when an active failure is happening. Its semi complicated but basically the CEL is only lit when the computer sees an active failure. So if conditions change and say a certain sensor is not used under those conditions the computer turns the light off and stores the code in memory. Just because the light is not on does not mean you don't have codes stored. I have even seen a computer just store a code and never turn the light on.
I would also suggest you take it to a shop and not a parts store. I don't know of any stores that use advanced scanners. They all use basic ones. Basic scanners will show engine codes only but there are 4 other systems that will throw codes. So I would find a shop that gives free estimates and have them throw an advanced scanner on it to retrieve all codes. Make sure you ask them if they use advanced scanners to see all systems.
As for the smell, this is probably normal. The converter does not function until it reaches operating temp so you will smell un-burnt fuel until it does.
The fuel light being on is normal if there is under a 1/4 tank of gas in it.
See if you can find a free estimate shop with an advanced scanner and let me know what they say.
Rich.
