I own a 1993 toyota pickup with 116000 on the drivetrain and body.I bought the truck with a blown motor for 300.00. It has a 22re crate motor in it which ive had no problems with yet. Ive been experiencing some kind of constant chattering gear type of noise when the truck is in 4wd and driving over 30 mph. The noise stays with the truck even if I push in the clutch at 30mph+. Ive also noticed if I drive the truck for over 20 min and come to a stop and try to take it out of 4wd it doesnt come out easily, but if I put it in reverse and back up a little usually I can get it to come out. All the fluids have been changed with the correct gear oil when I swapped the motorand have been checked for correct fluid capacity. The truck drives great in 2wd and I cant seem to hear any noise from the drivetrain at all. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED thank you

Hi there,

The noise, with out actually hearing it, may be a chipped tooth on a gear, possibly front diff or even a faulty tail shaft, as there is no noise at all in 2X4. The binding up, is called transmission creep, as the is no centre diff there is a tendency for the front & rear drives to be slightly out binding the transfer up, this is normally not a problem if 4X4 is engaged on dirt as there is enough slippage to unload the transmission, but if driven on hard surfaces the lack of slip will tend to bind things up a bit, uneven tyre dimensions front to rear will not help this either. Your transmission will not blow up, just keep the 4X4 to dirt as much as possible.
