1988 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 230, 00 miles

MY TOYOTA TRUCK WAS RUNNING REAL ROUGH BARELY COULD GET DOWN THE ROAD; TOOK IT TO TWO MECHANICS BOTH TOLD ME HAD A SMALL CRACK IN HEAD GASKET; YET I GET NO STEAM OR WHITE SMOKE FROM TAILPIPE NO WATER IN OIL; HAD PLUGS CHANGED AND WIRES CHANGED NOW RUNNING BETTER. HAD TO CHANGE THERMOSTAT BECAUSE I FAILED TO USE ANTIFREEZE CLOGGED THE THERMOSTAT WITH RUST. ALSO CHANGED UPPER HEATER HOSE THAT WAS BAD. FIRST QUESTION IVE DRAINED COOLING SYSTEM PUT NEW ANTIFREEZE IN SYSTEM BUT DURING DAY WATER RUNS HOT TOP OF WHITE LINE; AT NIGHT IM OKAY. WHAT CAN I DO.
2 QUESTION CAN A VEHICLE HAVE A SMALL CRAACK IN HEAD GASKET WITHOUT WATER IN OIL AND WHITE SMOKE FROM TAILPIPE STEAM?

If the head or head gasket has a crack, a block test will tell you! It detects hydrocarbons in the antifreeze, this would mean it's mixing with exhaust vapors.A pressure test will detect a cracked head. Is coolant level going low? Any foaming in the radiator?
