HI there,

There will be a fault in the SRS system, you will need to get a scan done first to identify the exact set fault code. This video will show you how.

Please run down this guide and report back.

There are sensors in the seat which can enable or disable the passengers airbag. These sensors may be malfunctioning, or as BMR said if you have any weight on the seat, it will cause the light to come on.

When you sit in the passenger seat the airbag light in the dash and center counsel does not come on, but if you are driving without a passenger the light for the airbag comes on. What would cause the problem and how do I go about fixing it?

Thanks

Welcome to 2CarPros.

There is a sensor which is under the passenger side seat. It is called an occupant detection sensor. When no one is in the seat, the light indicates the system is turned off on that side. When you have a passenger, the sensor completes the circuit and the system is activated.

I attached a picture. It is part of the SRS wiring schematic. It shows the sensor which I am referring to.

Now, if this is something that just started and you feel there is a fault, you should have it checked.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

That's telling you the computer detected a problem, set a diagnostic fault code, and turned the system off. You'll need to find a mechanic with a scanner that can access that computer to read the code. That will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. The most common problem is a broken clock spring. That's a wound-up ribbon cable in a plastic housing under the steering wheel.

Hi there,

You will have to get the code read, there will be a fault in the SRS system, the air bag is inop while the light is on, so get the code and see what the fault is.

I have a 1995 toyota corolla DX 1.8L and for past few days air bag light is on. Air bag light only comes on when I switch off the engine. When I start the engine, air bag light goes off and it is off when I am driving. Airbag light comes on only when I switch off the engine again.

You will have to get a scan done to identify which code has set, as SRS systems are extremely dangerous, we do not advise on repairs, this should be referred to a qualified tech for assistance.

Shorting Te1 and E1 in the diagnostic terminal will give you codes, but I think you will have to get SRS codes read by Toyota.
SRS repair should be done at shop or dealer, it can be dangerous if air bag deploys when you are working on it.
