My car has vibrated for the past 5 years I have had it, but every shop I have taken it to says no problem. The other day my check engine light came on so I went to the shop and had it diagnosed and they said it was the O2 sensors, had them replaced and they said I might need a new catalytic converter. Leaving the shop my car began to decel and actually wouldnt go any farther, but the engine was still running. The shop says the diagnostic test shows nothing is wrong. How do I know if I need to replace the cat or if its time to move on? I hate to keep investing when it is only going to get worse.

Have a backpressure test performed on the CAT, They remove the upstream O2 sensor, screw in a gauge and measure backpressure. If excessive, it means the CAT is clogged and will need to be replaced.

Converters get clogged by either a lean/rich air fuel mixture, or some impact event.
