Nearly a year ago, as I was driving, I heard/felt a bit of a pop and the engine just died. My gut says it was the timing belt breaking. But we haven't had the money to put into this car any more so we towed it back to the driveway where it has sat. If it was the timing belt, what are the chances that it's breakage may have caused other problems? Also, what would a repair of this type typically cost? Are there other possible causes for this type of breakdown? Thanks.

Toyota switched to a timing chain in 1998 on the 1ZZFE engine.

You can remove the cam cover and inspect the chain, it is doubtful the chain broke.

It is more likely a crank/cam sensor failure, but check the chain.
