I have just returned from a maintenance appointment and the mechanic who does not do engine work told me he thinks I may have a head gasket problem or it could be a manifold? Problem. He saw smoke from the head area. How do I know which it could be since I have no mechanical training and would want to know the symptoms prior to just going to a mechanic blindfolded. The tire mechanic did not have anyone to recommend to do the work. This car is old and I only need it for another six months. I drive it only on Sundays about four miles round trip and a few short trips during the week. I have a company car so do not need it for daily commute. Is a head gasket problem a costly repair on this car? If I have a head gasket problem and only need the car for another six months, is it even worth repairing? Could I drive it these few times over the next six months without the entire engine blowing up? It has high mileage also. Thank you for your help. Also, is their an easy and inexpensive "band-aid" fix for the problem? If you advise to fix the problem, how do I find a good mechanic?

Thank you. I just found your website and I know I will be using it very often. I have already put you on my favorites. This is a great service. I did not donate with my last question and wanted to do it but could not find the link after I submitted the question. I will donate the next time I have a question. I know as a non-mechanical person, I will treasure this website. I will never have to go to another mechanic without knowing something. Thank you again.
