Engine Cooling problem
1987 Toyota Corolla Front Wheel Drive Automatic 145, 00 miles

My car starts right up when it is cold, but after having driven for 20 minutes or more, starting is difficult to impossible. This problemis easily done away with by simply waiting until the car cools down.

I would think it is a bad ignition module rather than a head gasket. You can get the module tested at most autoparts stores free. On some Toyota's it is actually cheaper to buy a remanufactured distributor with a new module, rather than the module itself, so check with autoparts stores and compare prices.

If you are concerned about the head gasket, have a compression test performed, but the symptoms you describe are classic to a bad module.
