In the car manual for my 1985 Celica GTS (22R), the valve lash is adjusted by starting on the first valve at top dead center. To go to the next valve do I need to rotate the engine a full turn or how exactly do I line it up?

If you wish you can follow the firing order-like this-start with no.1 on TDC-adjust, then turn pulley 180deg adjust no.3, again turn pulley 180deg adjust no.4 and again turn 180deg to adjust no.2

Remember: its 2 to 1 ratio-meaning the crankshaft sprocket has to turn twice in order for it turn the camshaft a full turn.

If the engine tachometer is reading 600rpm-therefore the engine is at 1200rpm.

I pretty much knew how to do it but since I've never done it myself I wasn't positive on a couple of points. I sure appreciate your help.

Suggested Repair

Adjust valve lash in firing order. With cylinder 1 at TDC, adjust that valve, then rotate the crank pulley 180 degrees and adjust cylinder 3, another 180 degrees for cylinder 4, and another 180 degrees for cylinder 2. The crank turns twice for each full camshaft revolution.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1985 Toyota Celica GTS with a 22R engine asked how to move from the first valve at TDC to the next valves during a valve-lash adjustment. The expert said to follow the firing order: adjust cylinder 1 at TDC, then turn the crank pulley 180 degrees for cylinder 3, another 180 degrees for cylinder 4, and another 180 degrees for cylinder 2, noting the 2-to-1 crank-to-cam ratio. The owner thanked the expert.
