Transmission problem
2000 Toyota Camry 6 cyl Automatic 128000 miles

Hi, I am working on my 2000 camry and was replacing the the gear shift plate, but in order to remove it, to place the new one in, I have to remove the gear shift knob. I removed the two screws from the knob, and the gear shift plate is free to come out, but the ends of the wires that plug in the gear shift knob are locked into a plastic plug. The plug blocks the wires from sliding underneath all the other hardware in the center console. How do I unlock the wires from the plastic so I can slide the wiring out and be able to pull out the gear shift knob out of the old gear shift plate and therefore remove the plate. I also wondered when it comes to reinstall the gear shift knob, is there a particular way I have to hold the knob to make sure that when I reinstall the two screws I removed, that the button on the gear shift pushes in and out the way it's suppose to.

Hi mariamsabas,

Thank you for the donation.

To remove the wire, you need a strong, sharp and fine pin. At the wire side of connector you would notice a clip (lock tab), use the pin to pry the clip out to releast the lock. Use pin to poke into terminal side to release the lock and you can pull the wire out. Remember to mark the wire color first.

When instaling the shift knob, push the unlock knob almost fully in before aligning t with the screw holes. The lever has an adjustable tip, do not tamper with it unless you wish to adjust the unlock travel distance.

Thank you for the great advice. I used a jeweler's screwdriver to unlock the tab and release the wires. Everything is put back together and works great! Thanks again!
