What is the trick to removing the rear rotor? There is no screws in either of the little holes where one would expect the retaining screw to be?

Hello,

After you get the caliper and the caliper bracket removed.
Only thing that can keep the rotor in place are those screws. They are just there to keep the rotor in place during assembly and not required.
If there are no screws but the rotor is still on the hub. Then it is just seized on the hub, which happens all the time.
Simply use a mallet to tap on the rotor (all the way around) to break it lose from the hub.
