Ok I have a 04 chevy malibu maxx I was told that a inner and outer tie rod were going bad. I was also told that I could just replace them. I was wondering if it will be more cost effective to just replace all four of them if there is four tie rods, or just replace the ones that need to be fixed.

Outers are easy to replace yourself but the car will need an alignment afterward. Unlike some cars, (Fords) that have a very well-known history of steering linkages falling apart, your car does not have that history that I'm aware of so it would make more sense to only replace what needs to be replaced. I replaced the first steering and suspension part on my '88 Grand Caravan a couple of years ago at 203,000 miles. Everything else is still original and in good condition so you can see that replacing them just on principle would have been a waste of money.

This has to be aligned to do that and using a measurement like yours can wear the tires pronto. Have it aligned by a pro. Because it is toe in that needs to be adjusted. It has to be done on amachine because it's in degreees

Noises problem
2002 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

my wife and daughter say there is a noise that sounds like the wheel is about to fall off. Since I can't hear squat, I don't know what that sounds like. Is the tie rod end supposed to move if you twist it? My quess is that it does a little bit. How do I know if the tie rod end is bad?

Hi there,

you do get a small amount of rotation in a ball joint, but if there is any up and down movement its had it. I would go get the suspension & steering inspected by a qualified mechanic as he will be able to pick up defects that you may not be aware off, I would do this next.

Hi there,

not hard to replace, mack off the lock nut first, then remove the split pin and un do the nut, it will be stuck in a taper but a few heavy blows in the housing where the tie rod fits will normally dislodge it, un screw the tie rod and count how many turns so the new one goes back in the same position, fit a new split pin when re fitting the top nut tighten lock nut, and get an alignment check to be safe.

Ive been meaning to replace my outer tie rod ends and have not found the time to do it yet. The passanger one was really loose. My wife was driving the car and had a bunch of smoke coming out of it, then she said it was almost impossible to steer. Then the maintenance guy at her work took a look at it and said the power steering hose had ruptured, so Im thinking that the tie rod broke and ruptured the hose? Either way I havent had a chance to look at it yet. Do you think the steering pump might have gone bad? I really cant think why else the hose would have ruptured. Also, Im trying to find a diagram of the vehicle like you would find in a chiltons or something, I cant relly afford to buy a manual right now with the repair and all. Any idea where I could find a free one that I could download?

Hoses get old and leak. then the fluid gets on the rotors with the heat they will smoke. I suggest if possible to fix the car if being driven. With the tie rods the car may be not too safe. here is a diagram of front
