The car has been stalling at slow speeds, as in a parking lot or driveway. It is difficult to restart and I notice the battery and oil lights come on, among others. Last night, stalled again, restarted and now tachometer is not working. Strong smell of emissions when started in early morning. Only noise is a pinging in the pistons, particulary when engine goes faster-occasionally upon starting. Very overdue for an oil change

Scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge most auto parts stores rent them and go to the following links.

Thanks! Just wondering, can they pull a code from the engine if the check engine light is not on?

Yes they can, but only if the check engine light was on before and you have not cleared it with scan tool or disconnected the vehicle's battery. It will come up as a history code. These cars are very well known for misfires. Spark plugs on these Accents are due every 30K miles and the spark plug coils tend to fail a lot. There is also a computer software update that goes along with the misfiring problems. I would advise taking it to a Hyundai dealership and have them perform the repairs and update the ECM.

Also, they are known for crankshaft position sensors going bad which could also be the cause of your stalling and difficulty starting. But we won't know exactly until you provide us with the DTCs that are stored in the computer.
