Depends on county and state.

In calif. It is illegal to have auto stores to plug in scan tool. ( Amazing huh>)

yes, go to any auto store. And say.
Mister can you please scan my car.

Out comes OBD2 scan tool, he plugs it in.
And out comes code.
We look up code in 15sec and bingo.

Tighten gas cap.
