I am wondering how much work is involved in replaceing a speed sensor on a 1998 outback. I have codes 500 and 1540. The speedometer stopped working and the check engine light came on. How many sensors are there and where are they located? The vehicle is a 2.5 liter with 140,000 miles on it.

All you got is one sensor called VSS located at the transmission.
