Engine Cooling problem
2001 Subaru Legacy All Wheel Drive Automatic

My temperaure gauge keeps saying my car is overheating after about 2 miles. The coolant was low, so I filled it. But, the gauge is still saying I'm overheating. I've checked the fan and its working and the hood of my car doesn't feel hot at all. There's been no smoke or fumes or any hot air coming from the engine. The only thing I can think of is that I need an oil change. Could this be the problem or could it be something worse?

Hi there,

I would try replacing the temp sender first, as it may be faulty. You can ask your mechanic to check the coolant temp when hot at the radiator, that will also give an indication of any over heating problem.

Just wanted to thank you for the help so far. We are in the process of flushing the radiator to see if this might also be causing the problem. It has not been done since the vehicle was purchased

Hi there,

Make sure that the radiator is flow tested as well, you may think it is free of blockages but a flow test well make sure it is ok.
