At about 50,000 miles, my Subaru started making a ticking sound when first started in the AM for about 10 mins of driving. I took it to 3 different garages in Alaska, all of whom told me it was the Subaru tick. Ever heard of that? Now for the past year, the "check engine" light comes on periodocally. I took it to a garage that told me the "knock censor" is indicated in the diagonostic check. What is causing this and is there anything I can do. Is it going to be a problem in the future? I've had this car since it was 2 years old with 20,000 miles on it and I hope to keep driving it for a long time. Thanks

Hi there,

If a knock sensor I faulty you will hear a "rattle" sound from the engine when accelerating this is engine "ping" caused by incorrect ignition timing. A tick may be a bad valve adjustment, these are easily checked so I would start here.
