Is it possible for a water pump to be installed backwards in a legacy? before mine was replaced you could run the engine with the radiator cap off when checking it, now if the cap is off the coolant shoots out of the radiator like a gyser.

No, you can't install it backwards. If the coolant is shooting out, it sounds like a bad headgasket. Was the car overheated prior to replacing the pump? Have you checked engine compression?
