Still shutting off while driving

Hi:
Here is what I need you to do. When the engine doesn't start, check to see if the engine is getting both spark to the plugs and fuel.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

I have a 4 cyl Alero with a similar problem. Dont know if possible related on 6cyl. But I found the engine vacuum was sucking the hose closed to the map sensor. Replace the hose (its cheap) just for giggles and see if it helps. No check engine light on.

I will be driving my car on the road and for no reason it will stall? I will let it sit for half hour then it will start again. This will repeat about 3 times a day depending if and how long I drive. Ive had it to a repair shop and they have changed the ignition but still stalls

The place to start is by reading the diagnostic fault codes. They will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. In particular there are two sensors that often fail intermittently by becoming heat-sensitive and will cause stalling. They will work again once they cool down after about a half hour.

About a month ago I took the car in to get the oil changed. The check engine light had recently come on as well and the guy at the shop hooked up his tester. He said the code indicated something with the catalyst and that if I just ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner with the next tank of gas it would probably clear the check engine light. I did so and it worked. The check engine light went off. However, now the car will stall at idle or during turns. It does this while driving, while in park or while in neutral. With the car in park, if you just rev the engine it will get to around 4000 rpm (maybe 4200) and then drop to around 3200. Even if you floor it the engine will just bounce between those rpms. Was this just pure coincidence or did the injector cleaner make one problem much worse. Any ideas? Getting very tired of having to throw the car into neutral to re-start it after making a turn or stopping at a light.

When I'm at an idle the car wants to stall out. We have already replaced the IAC Valve. What should we check next.

Engine Performance problem
2000 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Automatic

I have done everything I can think of, so hopefully someone can help point me in the right direction!

Four days ago, I added some fuel injector cleaner to my gas tank. I drove it for about 15 minutes until it began to idle rough and eventually stall while I was stopped at a stop sign. I shut it off and had a hard tme starting it back up - I tried several times until it finally started. Since then, it has idled really rough and the tachometer jumps around just under 1000RPMs and has hesitated whlie I take off from a stop or idle. It runs fine at highway speeds though. I took it to Autozone where they said that it didn't pull any codes other than the engine having "multiple misfires". I changed the spark plugs and "wires"(more like boots), replaced the IAC valve, replaced the MAP sensor, replaced the throttle position senor, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the air filter, checked a vacuum hose and didn't see anything suspicious, and I checked the coils which all appear to be sparking fine. My next thought is that the problem cound be the fuel injectors. Does anyone have any feedback/ideas that may help? I have no idea how to change/replace fuel injectors and I'm at a loss for ideas about what could be wrong. Any information would be helpful!

My daughters Alero (4cyl 2.4, 178,000 miles) also had the same problem. Would stall coming to a stop or when coasting. Rough idle and stumble or stall, sometimes both if you put the slightest pressure on the accelerator when stopped in gear. No check engine light.I eliminated the obvious. Had fairly new spark plugs. Replaced the spark plug boots/connectors and fuel filter (original filter!). But still had same problem. Then I saw it! When the engine was at idle the vacuum was sucking the hose to the map sensor closed! Replaced with $2.00 peice of vacuum hose. Problem gone. Still has inherent shaky idle but runs good. Im happy. And solved the problem myself. Sometimes the vacuum hose looks fine at the sensor but is split where it connects to the vacuum port on the other side.

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.

Hi, I suspect a bad crank position sensor, but I would start by testing fuel pressure and spark when the car is acting up, we can then move to the next step.

Two things, vehicle shut off when driving. When I tried to restart it will start and shut off immediately. When I got it restarted it cuts out at 3500 RPMs.
