recently my car started leaking water, and had been fine. Yesterday while stuck in traffic steam started to come from the engine and it started to make a funny rattling noise. The car then cut out. We opened the bonnet and noticed steam coming from the coolant. Later the car started up okay, but lots of steam/smoke coming from the exhaust along with the funny rattling noise.

Get the cooling system checked for exhaust gasses if this is the case you will have a head problem to sort out, a cooling system pressure test will locate the original leak. The head check is a quick and simple chemical test to check for the exhaust gasses in the cooling system.
