The purple wire at the starter solenoid should be hot with key in the crank position, is it? Key on, do you have primary voltage at the ignition coil? Have to test when problem is ongoing. Maybe you have a problem with feed to or from ignition switch?

I guess I'll have to wait until a hot day next September and keep a meter in the car with me. Could a problem in the ignition switch explain both the ignition failure and the subsequent starter failure? And is the ignition switch prone to temperature issues? I could try to heat with a blow dryer - think that might do anything? Thanks for the help, by the way!

Intermittent issues can be a pain. You have to find out what your missing, when the problem occurs. The ignition switch could cause both issues. Hard to be sure without testing. Don't know if blow dryer would help or not? Yeah, it is frustrating to have to wait till something happens, before you can test.
