What would make a fuel injected car only start if you hold down the has pedal?

That usually means that it is flooded because holding down the gas pedal put it in clear flood mode. If it is happening constantly, the first thing you may want to check is that there is not too much fuel pressure, because that could cause a too rich fuel mixture and flooding because the little amount of time the fuel injector is open, too much fuel can be pressed through because of the too high fuel pressure. If it is too high look for a kinked or dented metal fuel line causing excessive back-pressure and making the pressure rise.

If the engine ID/VIN number is ATQ the fuel pressure spec at idle is 52 psi and if the engine ID/VIN number is BDF, the fuel pressure spec is 36 psi.
