Truck has less than half tank and parked on slight incline with gas tank going downhill it would turn over but not start. Then moved to flat ground and it started. Have you heard of Ford's having this issue?

Good morning,

Inside the fuel tanks are baffles. There job is to keep fuel in all areas of the tank especially when turning and hills. They do fail and when that happens, this is the result.

Being as the truck is eighteen years old, these baffles could have failed. You would need to replace the tank as they cannot be serviced or replaced.

There are no TSB or recalls for this issue. This issue is common to all manufacturers that use these types of tanks.

Lets hope so but I doubt it. Things have a habit of catching us off guard at times. I wish they could fix themselves.

We just got it back had to have the head replaced because it kept throwing misfire code on cylinder three. Will it throw a code if there is something wrong?

No, not for the fuel tank issue. Codes will set for fuel control issues, not mechanical issues.

Loss of compression due to a burnt valve or a bad valve seat will set a misfire dtc. And F-150s not starting when parked nose down with 1/4 tank or less not starting, is absolutely common common common! We get trucks towed to my dealer all the time for this! When the tow truck puts it down on flat ground, starts right up! The fuel pump is mounted at the rear of the tank and will starve of fuel if the truck is left parked nose down if you have low fuel level. No new tank will fix this, these trucks have had this issue since day 1 of production. Hope I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes but I’ve been a Ford dealer tech for 25 years and I’ve seen this way too much lol.

Had the head replaced they changed all spark plugs when they had it in there. Been running gone for a week and it was rear end down hill when it wouldn't start. It started up fine yesterday three times on flat ground. Was hoping it was just a fluke.

Oh okay. I would still do a fuel pressure bleed down test. If the check valve in the pump does not hold pressure the will have difficulty starting. Another thing simple to check is to see if the “ service engine soon” light on the instrument cluster is illuminated with the key in the run position. If it is not lit, the most common fault is the PCM power relay. Also have someone put their ear at the fuel filler neck while turning the key to the run position to see if they hear the pump buzz.

We have a remote start and we do not use it. Truck started fuel pump works. Can an after market remote start make it turn over but not start?
