The first thing that needs done is to have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Since the engine light was flashing, that indicates a misfire, so we need to identify that first.

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will check it free of charge. If the vehicle is unsafe to drive, see if a parts store will lend or rent one to you. Once you get the codes, let me know what they are so I can guide you.
