I need to change the valve cover gasket and decided to change plugs at the same time. The car is 18 years old with 75,000 miles. I am concerned if the original plugs will come out without damaging the head. Should I let some WD-40 soak down at the base of the old plugs to help loosen up threads? Thanks Bob. Also, can you reset a service engine light by disconnecting both battery terminals for a few minutes and reconnecting them?

Hi,

As far as resetting the check engine light (CEL), it will be based on what type of code is stored. If it is a permanent code, it won't clear until the problem is resolved.

As far as the spark plugs are concerned, you shouldn't have any issues, but it never hurts to use penetrating fluid. When you remove them, take your time. If I have a concern, I turn the plug out two revolutions and then back in a half and continue to do that until it's out. By turning it back in a bit, if there is dirt built up on the threads, it helps move it, so it doesn't cause the plug to bind.

Let me know if you have other questions or if I can help in any way.

Take care,

Hi,

There are many good ones. At the shop, I use PB Blaster. Spray it the night before doing the work and allow it to soak overnight. That should be more than enough time.

On the other hand, try to see if one comes out with ease before doing anything. You may be surprised. They may come right out for you.

Let me know how things work out for you.

Joe
