1. Acceleration is very slow. This is a big issue on highways, especially entering the highway, where quick acceleration is needed to match oncoming traffic.
2. The engine is extremely loud during acceleration.
3. The rpm needle becomes very high during acceleration. Recently on the highway, RPMs went up to 4,500 RPMs, and even then, acceleration was very sluggish.
4. RPM is similarly high when climbing hills.
5. RPM is normal on level roads.
6. Check engine light is on. Will take to the mechanic in August.

The problem is that the same symptoms were there last year, along with the check engine light. The mechanic (independent) performed repairs for over $1,000, and the check engine light went away, but the acceleration issue persisted. Now the check engine light is back.

Hi,

Based on your description, it sounds like the transmission is slipping. If the engine RPM's increase, but the vehicle doesn't accelerate in relationship of the engine speed, it is likely slipping.

Do me a favor. First, I attached the directions below specific to your vehicle for checking the transmission fluid. Do this first.

Next, since the check engine light is on, stop at a local parts store such as AutoZone and have them scan to computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Normally (don't know where you are located), this is a free service they offer.

Have them check it and print out the results or you and let me know what they find.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the response. I did what you suggested, and tx oil was way above the upper limit. I wonder if the engine was too hot. The check engine code was P2422 - EVAP CVS stuck shut, so nothing to do with the tx.
I also noticed that RPM count would steadily increase as I accelerate or go up an incline, and then, the RPM count would suddenly fall (by about 500 RPMs). ChatGPT says this is a sign of tx slipping?

If it is tx slipping, what is the cure? I hope it does not mean a tx replacement :(.
Thanks again.

Hi,

Yep, that is one of the first things I mentioned. It sounds like it is slipping. However, my question is why would the fluid be over full? Do me a favor. First, when the engine is cold, check the engine coolant to see if it appears that anything could be mixing with it. Also, inspect the transmission fluid again. It should be a pinkish color. Let me know what it looks like.

Next, if possible, record the vehicle when this is happening. If you could have a helper hold your phone and video the engine RPM's and speedometer while this happens, it would help me. If possible, let one window open so I can hear the engine.

One last question. I need to confirm if this is a 4wd or 2wd vehicle and the engine size.

Let me know.

Joe
