When shifting the transmission into reverse the vehicle shuts off?

It cranks up run well, but as soon as you put it in drive it jerks. Put it in reverse and it cuts off.

Does it jerk and stall out when you put in drive as well? If so, it sounds like the torque converter has gone out, which is common. You may want to raise the back of the car on jack stands and try to put it in gear and reverse to see if the engine stays running and the tires spin immediately, then try again with your foot on the brake to see what happens. here is a guide to help:
