Can you clarify the override button that you are talking about? Are you saying that you are pushing the interlock button down manually? Do you have a column shift or the "floor" shift option?

If you are pushing this in and it is still not releasing then most likely the shifter will need to be replaced but let's clarify this and go from there. Thanks

I have the shifter on the floor with the cup holder area. not on the steering column.

I popped off the cup holder and found the white button to push to override to release. when I push on the brakes, it clicks and moves up and down. and I can push it a little farther but shifter won't release. truck is on slight incline and we tried rocking it to maybe take pressure off but didn't release.

If you can see the shift interlock operating when you press the brake, that tells me that the electrical part of the interlock is operating normally which would lead to a mechanical issue. You can try to pop off the cable's connection at the shifter assembly, then pull on the cable end with a pair of pliers while holding your foot firmly on the brake and also with the parking brake applied also. If it comes out of gear the issue will be with the shifter assembly, if it still doesn't then the issue is with the cable or transmission linkage.
