What’s happening to my car if suddenly, while driving, the gears don’t engage. The engine runs, but when I try to change gear mode it doesn’t shift.

So does the car move and not shift or does the car not move? Anytime you have a transmission problem it is best to check the fluid level and condition. Here is a guide to help with the instructions for your car in the images below.

Also, can I ask if the reverse lights come on? This can help test the gear range sensor, we should run the codes as well.

This car has the CVT transmission which has a history of failure. Let me know if the fluid is dark and burnt smelling. Checking this fluid is much like the old standard transmission with a drain plug in the side of the case which is what the level should be. You might want to try a fluid change as well.

Use Honda HCF-2.
NOTE: Using the wrong type of fluid will damage the transmission.

Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
