In most cases, white smoke is an indicator that engine coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber. The coolant burns with the fuel and produces a white smoke. Take a look at this link:

Now, I don't want to concern you with the above link. If you live in an area where the temps are cooler, it could simply be condensation burning off in the exhaust. However, that should stop as the engine warms.
If you are concerned that it is a head gasket, here is a link that shows how to check for a bad head gasket. Just follow the directions.
