Engine Cooling problem
1997 Saturn SL2 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 40410 miles

My car was smoking the other day and all the coolant emptied out of the reservior. When I looked under the hood, the smoke was around the coolant reservior. Can you tell me what is wrong with the car? Or what might be wrong?

When ur car overheated did the temp gauge read into the red or close to it?Also if ur a/c works when u turn it on does the radiator cooling fan come on?Do u have any codes? When ur car overhears th coolant boils out of it. Let me know what u find.

I don't know if the gauge was in the red. I was too flustered by the smoke and turned the car off right away. How can I tell if the radiator cooling fan comes on when I turn the air conditioner on. I just turn it on and didn't notice anything. Where do I see codes? Could it be the thermostat, a leaking hose?

Open the hood start the car turn on the a/c go by the radiator and see if u can hear the fan running or feel the air comming out of the radiator towards the engine. As far as a leak u could have one or u could have a bad cooling fan motor or a bad coolant temp sensor. The most common place for ur model car to leak coolant is the radiator below where the upper radiator hose goes on the tank part where u will see a transmission cooler line screwed in it cracks and leaks. The other place is the water pump.U can see that leak on the passenger side underneath the car dripping of the sub frame. Fill the car up with water check that fan out for me and also look for leaks while it runs pay attenion to temp gauge too. As far as codes if u don't live in California u can go to a parts store like autozone and they will read codes for free. If u find any codes write down the numbers and let me know what they are. Let me know what u find.
