O2 Sensor

I have a 1996 Saturn SL1, 1.9 SOHC, manual tranny. I'm needing to change the upstream O2 sensor. I've called around to get prices and they cost a lil bit more than I expected. Only Bosch is available around here. One store had universal O2 sensors. He said that I would have to do the wire work myself (splicing). I don't have a problem with that, as I've done a good bit of elec work in autos. What makes me wonder is that the universal is 50 bucks cheaper. Is it okay to use the universal or is it just crap? Thanks in advance.

As it turns out, I went to the parts store, and the cheaper O2 sensor was EXACT same Bosch sensor as it's more expensive counterpart. I just had to crimp it and shrink the heat-shrink jacket myself, instead of just "plug-and-play". That made all the price difference. Thank you for your help.

Hey jwright0622,

You will have to let us know how it works out for you. I have shyed away fro the universal type after I read an article on their function. According to the article the sensor requires a very small amout of outside air to function. The outside air is supposedly supplied thru the space between the wire and its insulation. I kid you not.

Good luck and let us know. :)
