Non-working speedometer

I have a 1994 Saturn SL2 and the speedometer isn't working. What do I need to check to find the reason it's not working?

Do you have a tach in the vehicle and does that work? Does the odometer work? Could be a Variable Speed Sensor of the tranny that sends the signals to the gauges or the guage itself.
