2002 Other Saturn Models Sevice Engine Soon Light

We have a 2002 Saturn SL1 with a little over 79000 miles on it. The "Service Engine Soon" light has come on and stays on. What does this mean? Is it the failure of some critical engine part or just a reminder to service the engine. We don't have the owners manual, so I thought we would pose the quesiton to you before going to the dealer. The car runs fine.

What it means is the computer has stored an OBD2 code/s and the only way to find out what's the problem within the engine management is to get scanned for code/s-Autozone provides this service for free and can remedy the problem on the spot if you wish.
