I recently bought a 98 saturn. I have put 139559 miles on the car. For the first time yesterday, my check engine light came on. It stays on the entire time my car is running. I just want to know if anyone knows the possible problems with my car. People have told me that I might need a tuneup or a new alternator? Please help! Thank you!

You need to have the codes read from the computer to start diagnosing. The check engine light comes on when a problem affecting emissions happens. There are hundreds of reasons.

I know this probably has nothing to do with this, but I recently got my emissions done and everything was fine. Could the guy working there messed up anything, or is that just coincidence? Thank u so much

What does "got my emissions done" mean.

You need to have the codes pulled front the computer to start any diagnosis. Not sure what was done, so I don't know if there can be a relationship. Until the codes are pulled and the problem diagnosed, there can only be speculation.

A good what?

The testing place only hooks up to the DLC, it isn't their fault as I see it at this point. Post the ocdes if you lke, but having a good shop troubleshoot it, may make it quicker for you.
