Engine Performance problem
1999 Other Saturn Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

1999 sc-1 100k miles. My son's first car. Didn't start one day. Would not crank. Not the battery. I jacked car up, got under the car and whacked the starter several times. The car started. Figured bad starter. Replaced it. Couple of weeks later, same problem. After a ten minute drive, every once in a while, it would not start. All the bells and lights and whistles would come on, but when the key is turned all the way to start, engine would not crank. Nothing at all. Then, miraculously after 15-20 minutes, the car would start and run perfectly.(Could have saved starter $) This has happened several times during the past 2 months. My mechanic says it has to happen for him, for a diagnosis. Unfortunately, it never does. My son is usually at school or at the store when it happens. He waits the 15 minutes and it starts. I did notice one thing. After it does not start, if you turn the key to off and remove the key, a clicking sound, not unlike a turn signal, can be heard coming from the passenger side of the trunk, rear seat area. Stuck relay? It "clicks about 10 times then stops. Have yet to locate exactly where sound is coming from. Don't know if one thing has to do with the other but I'm dumbfounded. Any suggestions?

I believe I've found the culprit. For the past 4 weeks I've told my son not to use the key bob to lock, unlock, activate the alarm system on the car. Since then, NO problem starting the car. Apparently the passlock sysytem (no idea how it works) is on the way out and is malfunctioning or may have to be reset. Son just has to get used to using his key to open the door. This also happened to my 2001 SL2
Might be a problem with GM passlocks as a friend also had same with another GM car.

Having the same issue with a SC1 we acquired a couple months ago. I only use the key, no remote. Wife does have a remote. It's happened to me on 2-3 occasions. I only have a key, however she may have used remote to lock? I will have her only use key as well to see if the 'no start' issue disappears. I've heard the same clicking you described as well coming from the back trunk area! Makes sense. Hope this works! Thanks for sharing.

One more thing. This last time the 'no start' was accompanied with a flashing dome light. Maybe another feature of the cars alarm system? Will only use key to see if it resolves the problem.

If you have a test light or a multimeter we can check and see if it's the remote key less entry module causing the car not to start your car doesn't have a passlock system. Now on your 2001 SL2 that has a passlock system but it won't cause your car not to crank over it will disable your fuel injector pulse's but the car will still crank over. Two different system's.

My SC1 is also a 1999 model year. I have a multimeter. How do you determine if keyless system is the cause. Also I mentioned I had the dome light blinking on & off repeatedly. Does that tell us something? This happened late last night. This morning I tried it and it's fine once again! Thanks for the help.
